About converting a dog's age to human years
The idea that one dog year equals seven human years is one of the most durable pieces of misinformation in pet ownership. It appears to have originated as a rounded marketing figure in the middle of the twentieth century, derived from dividing an average human lifespan by an average dog lifespan, and it describes the shape of dog ageing badly at every stage. Dogs mature extraordinarily quickly at the start. A dog at one year old is sexually mature, physically near full size for smaller breeds, and developmentally comparable to a human in their mid-teens — not a seven-year-old. The second year adds roughly nine more human-equivalent years, taking a two-year-old dog to something near twenty-four. After that the rate drops sharply and becomes size-dependent, which is where the single ratio fails completely. Size is the strongest predictor of lifespan within the species, and it runs opposite to the pattern across species, where larger animals generally live longer. A giant breed may be geriatric at eight while a small terrier is comfortably middle-aged at ten. The mechanism is not settled; higher growth-hormone levels and accumulated cellular damage from rapid growth are the leading explanations. More recent work using DNA methylation has produced a logarithmic model — approximately sixteen times the natural log of the dog's age plus thirty-one — which captures the same shape: very rapid early ageing followed by a long, much slower stretch.
