About estimating ovulation and the fertile window

Ovulation is estimated from the structure of the menstrual cycle, and the useful fact is that the cycle has one variable half and one nearly fixed one. The follicular phase, from the start of a period to ovulation, varies substantially between people and between cycles. The luteal phase, from ovulation to the next period, is close to constant at around fourteen days. That asymmetry is why the right calculation counts backwards from the expected next period rather than forwards from the last one. The common shortcut of halving the cycle length is correct only at twenty-eight days and drifts in the wrong direction elsewhere: someone on a thirty-two day cycle ovulates near day eighteen, four days later than the shortcut suggests. The fertile window is six days rather than one because of an asymmetry in survival times. Sperm remain viable for up to five days in the reproductive tract, so conception can follow intercourse well before the egg is released, while the egg itself survives only twelve to twenty-four hours. The window therefore opens five days before ovulation and closes on the day itself. What a calendar cannot do is predict a particular cycle. Studies using hormonal markers find that calendar-based estimates correctly identify the fertile window in roughly a third of cycles, because ovulation shifts with illness, stress, sleep and travel. It is a reasonable starting point and a poor sole method — for either conceiving or avoiding it.

Why count back from the next period instead of forward from the last?
Because the phase after ovulation — the luteal phase — is close to fixed at around 14 days, while the phase before it varies. On a 32-day cycle ovulation is near day 18, not day 16, so halving the cycle length gives the wrong date for anyone who is not on 28 days.
Why is the fertile window six days rather than one?
Because sperm can survive up to five days in the reproductive tract, so intercourse several days before ovulation can still result in conception. The egg itself survives only 12 to 24 hours, which is why the window closes on the day of ovulation rather than after it.
How accurate is this?

What tracks ovulation more precisely?
Ovulation predictor kits detect the luteinising hormone surge a day or so beforehand. Basal body temperature rises after ovulation, which confirms it happened but is too late to act on for that cycle. Cervical mucus changes are free and reasonably informative with practice.
Can this be used to avoid pregnancy?
It should not be relied on. Calendar-based methods have a typical-use failure rate around 12 to 24 percent a year, because ovulation timing shifts with illness, stress and travel. Fertility awareness methods that work combine several daily observations and require training.
