About converting JPG to PNG

This conversion is frequently misunderstood, so it is worth being blunt: turning a JPG into a PNG cannot recover anything. JPEG compression works by permanently discarding information the eye is poor at detecting, and once discarded it is not recoverable by any format change. What PNG gives you is a guarantee going forward. Because it is lossless, every subsequent save writes the same pixels, so a file you crop, annotate and re-save five times looks identical to the first save. The same sequence in JPG compounds a little degradation at every step, which is how images passed repeatedly between apps acquire that blocky, washed-out look. The trade is size, and it is steep: photographic content can grow five to ten times, because PNG has no way to exploit the eye-fooling shortcuts JPEG relies on. So convert when you are entering an editing workflow or satisfying a tool that demands PNG, and stay on JPG when the file is finished and headed for the web. Frequently asked questions

Will this improve my image quality?
No. Detail a JPG discarded is gone permanently. PNG only guarantees that nothing further is lost from this point on, which matters if you are about to edit and re-save.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel exactly. A photograph has millions of subtly different pixels and compresses poorly losslessly, so a 500 KB JPG can easily become 4 MB.
Will it have a transparent background?
No. PNG supports transparency, but a JPG has none to carry over. The result is fully opaque. Removing a background is a separate operation.
When should I actually do this?
When a tool or platform requires PNG, or when you are about to make repeated edits and want to avoid compounding JPG loss with each save.
