Multiply miles by 1.609344 to get kilometres. The value is exact by international agreement, so a 26.2 mile marathon is 42.165 kilometres — close to but not identical with the official 42.195.

How to use Miles to KM Converter

  1. Enter the miles. Decimals are fine.
  2. Read the kilometres. To three decimals, with metres underneath.

About converting miles to kilometres

Converting miles to kilometres is mostly a travel problem, and the errors that matter are rarely arithmetic. Fuel economy is the classic trap: miles per gallon cannot be converted with a distance factor alone, because there are two gallons in common use and they differ by twenty percent. An American car rated at 30 mpg and a British one rated at 30 mpg are not equally efficient, and both convert differently again into litres per hundred kilometres, which is the metric convention and inverts the relationship — lower is better rather than higher. The second trap is that metric fuel figures measure consumption while imperial ones measure economy, so the two do not even scale in the same direction. For distance alone the conversion is exact and the mental shortcuts are unusually good. Adding sixty percent lands within half a percent. The Fibonacci coincidence is better still and pleasingly odd: successive Fibonacci numbers converge on the golden ratio, 1.618, which happens to sit within one percent of 1.609 — so 3 miles is about 5 km, 5 is about 8, 8 is about 13, and 13 is about 21, all accurate enough to navigate by.

Frequently asked questions

What is the quick mental conversion?
Add sixty percent: half again plus a tenth. 40 miles becomes 40 + 20 + 4 = 64 km, against the true 64.4. Another route is the Fibonacci trick — consecutive Fibonacci numbers approximate the ratio, so 5 miles is about 8 km and 8 miles about 13.
Why is 26.2 miles not exactly a marathon?
Because the marathon is defined in metric as 42.195 kilometres, which is 26.2188 miles. The 26.2 everyone quotes is a rounding of that, so converting it back gives 42.165 — thirty metres short of the real thing.
How do I convert miles per gallon?
Not with this factor alone, because gallons differ too. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon 4.546, so 30 US mpg is 12.75 km per litre while 30 imperial mpg is 10.62. Check which gallon before converting.
Which countries still use miles?
The United States, the United Kingdom and a handful of others for road signs. The UK is a partial case: distances and speeds are imperial, but fuel is sold in litres and most other measurement is metric, which is why British drivers convert constantly.
