Divide millilitres by 29.57 for US fluid ounces, or by 28.41 for imperial. A fluid ounce measures volume, not weight, and the two systems differ by about four percent.

How to use ML to Fluid Ounces Converter

  1. Enter the value. Decimals are fine.
  2. Read the conversion. Both systems are shown, so you can see which one your source meant.

About converting millilitres to fluid ounces

Fluid ounces are volume, which is the first thing to be clear about, because the shared name with the weight ounce causes constant confusion. They coincide only for water and only roughly: a US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces. For flour, oil, honey or anything else the relationship changes entirely, which is why converting a volume measurement to a weight requires a density and cannot be done by unit arithmetic alone. The second complication is that there are two fluid ounces. The imperial one is 28.41 millilitres and the US one is 29.57, a difference of about four percent, and they arise from being fractions of two different gallons — a 160th of the larger imperial gallon and a 128th of the smaller US one. Across a full recipe that four percent compounds. Cups are worse again, because the US customary cup of 236.6 millilitres, the US legal cup of 240 used on nutrition labels, and the metric cup of 250 used in Australia and much of Europe are three different measures sharing a name. For dry ingredients the whole problem disappears if you weigh instead, which is why professional baking works in grams and specifies volume for nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures weight. They coincide only for water, and only approximately. Converting between them for any other substance requires knowing its density.
How many ml in a US cup?
236.6 millilitres, usually rounded to 240 in nutrition labelling and to 250 in metric recipes. Those roundings differ by six percent, which is enough to matter in baking and not in a soup.
Why do US and imperial fluid ounces differ?
Because they were defined against different gallons. The imperial fluid ounce is a 160th of an imperial gallon; the US one is a 128th of a smaller US gallon. The result is that the imperial ounce is slightly smaller despite the imperial gallon being larger.
Which should I use for a recipe?
Whichever system the recipe came from. An American recipe means US fluid ounces and US cups; a British one predating metrication means imperial. When in doubt, weigh dry ingredients instead — weight is unambiguous and far more repeatable.
