How much paint, flooring or wallpaper do I need?
Measure the area, add a waste allowance set by the material and the method, and round up to whole units. The allowance is not padding — it covers offcuts, uneven surfaces and pattern matching.

Area is the easy part
Every material estimate starts the same way: length times width for a floor or ceiling, perimeter times height for walls. That arithmetic is not where estimates go wrong.
What differs is the unit the material is sold in and how much of it you lose getting it onto the surface. Paint is sold by volume and covers an area that depends on how absorbent the surface is. Flooring is sold in packs that cover a stated area but is laid in fixed-length planks. Wallpaper is sold in rolls but hung in full-height drops. Concrete is sold by weight and measured by volume. In each case the shop unit and the useful unit are different things.
Deductions for doors and windows are the second trap, and the instinct to be precise makes it worse. Subtracting the exact area of a window over-estimates the saving badly, because the wall above and below still needs covering and, for wallpaper, still consumes a full-length cut. One drop or one standard allowance per opening is closer to reality than measuring.
The general principle is to be generous where the material is cheap and the failure is expensive. A litre of leftover paint costs very little; running out two-thirds of the way up a wall costs a visible join.
Waste is set by the method, not the room
The single biggest variable in any estimate is how the material is applied, and it varies far more than people expect.
Flooring laid straight in a rectangular room wastes around ten percent, almost all of it in the offcut at the end of each row — and a good fitter starts the next row with that offcut, which is what keeps the number that low. A diagonal lay doubles it, because every board meets a wall at an angle. Herringbone is higher again at around twenty-five percent.
Wallpaper waste is decided by the pattern repeat rather than by the room at all. Each drop must begin at the same point in the design to line up with its neighbour, so every drop is cut to a whole number of repeats rather than to the wall height. A twenty-centimetre repeat costs almost nothing; a sixty-four-centimetre repeat on a two-metre-forty wall forces a two-metre-fifty-six cut and throws away sixteen centimetres every single time. Two papers with identical coverage figures can need different quantities.
Paint waste is about the surface. The coverage figure on a tin assumes a sealed, previously painted wall in good condition. Bare plaster absorbs dramatically more, which is why a mist coat exists, and fresh filler behaves the same way in patches. A strong colour change routinely needs a third coat regardless of what the tin promises.
Concrete is the exception where the variability is in the hole rather than the material. An excavation is never as even as the drawing, and every millimetre of extra depth across a four by three metre slab is another twelve litres.
Buy it all at once
This applies to paint, flooring, wallpaper and tiles alike, and it is the rule most often broken by people trying to avoid waste.
These materials are produced in batches, and colour drifts slightly between production runs. The difference is invisible in a shop under fluorescent light and obvious across a wall or a floor in daylight. A top-up order placed a fortnight later frequently arrives from a different batch and cannot be blended in.
This inverts the usual instinct about waste. Ordering ten percent extra and having some left over is a small, recoverable cost. Ordering exactly enough, running short, and topping up from a different batch produces a permanent visible defect. The batch number is printed on the tin or the pack; checking that they match at the point of purchase takes seconds.
It is also why keeping the leftovers matters. A damaged floor plank or a scuffed wall years later cannot be matched from a shop, because the product line will have changed. A few spare planks and a half-tin of paint turn a replacement job into a twenty-minute repair.
The mistakes that cost a second trip
Running out of concrete mid-pour is the most serious, because it is not merely inconvenient. Concrete begins setting as soon as it is mixed, and fresh material poured against a batch that has started to cure forms a cold joint — a permanent weak seam through the slab. A trip to buy more bags is exactly how that happens, which is why generous ordering matters more here than anywhere else.
For flooring, the omission that ruins jobs is the expansion gap. Wood and laminate move with humidity, and a floor laid tight against the walls has nowhere to go; it lifts in the middle, usually in the first damp season, and cannot be corrected without taking it up. Ten to twelve millimetres around every edge, hidden by beading, is standard and is not optional.
For paint on new plaster, it is the mist coat. Full-strength emulsion sits on top of unsealed plaster rather than soaking in, and can peel away in sheets months later. Thinning the first coat with about ten percent water is what seals the surface.
And across all of them, the quiet one: measuring in the wrong unit. Coverage figures are quoted per square metre in some markets and per square foot in others, tins come in litres and gallons, and pack sizes differ by region. Converting once at the start, carefully, is less error-prone than converting each figure as it comes up.
